Obituary

Tomlinson Funeral Home and Crematory announces the death of Mr. Vaughn Riner age 74 of Swainsboro on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the Emanuel Medical Center following an extended illness.

Graveside services will be Tuesday,  March 29, 2022 at 11:00 am in the Sardis Cemetery with Rev. Tom Tidwell and Hon. Kathy Palmer officiating.

The family will receive friends at Calvary United Methodist Church following services from 2:00-4:00 pm .

Vaughn Riner was born September 7, 1947 in Wadley, GA to Albert Lawton and Allegra Luona Purvis Riner. He attended Emanuel County Schools and was a member of the 1965 graduating class.

During school he was a bag boy and stock boy at Paige's Red and White. After graduation he worked at Diamond Brothers Furniture Factory, assembling chair arms. He joined the Georgia National Guard in 1968 and attended basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. He served in Augusta for six years at the Engineering Battalion B, reaching the rank of Sergeant. After basic training he went to work at the United States Postal Service as a clerk for twelve years, then he became a rural mail carrier where he remained for 30 years. He reached a milestone of one million miles without an accident. He retired from USPS in 2010 with 42 years of service.

Vaughn was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church from the age of six. He had thirteen years of perfect Sunday School attendance interrupted only by basic training.

Vaughn was a current member of the Board of Directors of Herrington Homestead. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Swainsboro Country Club and was 2014 Super Senior Golf Champion. He was the current chairman of the Board of Trustees of Calvary United Methodist Church. He was also Lay Leader, Historian, and during his lifetime has been in every leadership position at the church including Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Board, and worship leader. He was Dixie Youth League coach for many years and served as a baseball/softball coach and umpire for the Swainsboro Emanuel County Recreation Department.

Vaughn is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lawton Dwight Riner.

He is survived by his Wife Marsha Derriso Riner, Children Chris Riner and Amanda (Jerod) Goodman of Swainsboro, and Angela (Todd) Hooks of Nunez. He is also survived by his Grandchildren Hannah Goodman, Hope Goodman, River Hooks, and Paige Hooks. Brothers Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Wiley Alford Riner (Linda) of Kerrville, TX, Raymond Riner (Pat) of Swainsboro, Sister Ruth (Joe) Patti of Hinesville, GA, the Mother of his children Martha Walker (Wiley) of Swainsboro and many Nieces and Nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church Missions or Calvary United Methodist Men at PO Box 683 Swainsboro, GA 30401.
