Funeral services for Martha "Marty" Meeks Gunn, age 84, will be held at the First Baptist Church of Swainsboro on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at 2:00 pm with Dr. Robert Blankenship and the Reverend Franklin Sasser officiating.Pallbearers will be Neil Kalmanson,Joe Gunn, Tim Gunn, Ben Gunn, John Dunn, and John Michael Dunn. Burial will be at the Swainsboro Cemetery. Marty passed away Saturday afternoon, October 5th, at the Emanuel County Nursing Home. Marty was the youngest child of Melvin and Vivian Meeks of Ocilla, Georgia and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lorna Lawrence, formerly of Elberton, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her brothers George Meeks and Valjean Meeks and her sister Melba Meeks Walker. She retired as a second grade teacher at the Swainsboro Primary School and previously taught at Atkinson Elementary School in Newnan, Georgia. Marty was renowned locally for her culinary arts, particularly for making wedding and party cakes. Her skills in sewing, crocheting, knitting, and quilting were equally admired. During her college days, Marty was the pianist and organist for the Mercer University evening prayer groups. Locally, she was a volunteer for the 4-H Program,the Emanuel County Arts Council, the Historic Preservation Society, the Retired Educators Association, and the Swainsboro Women's Club. She was a choir member at her church in Newnan for 25 years and in Swainsboro for 10 years. Her sweet disposition and quiet demeanor endeared her to all. She kept a list of all the books she read, which included hundreds of titles, particularly historic novels and adventure and mystery novels. Marty is survived by her husband Dr. Willie D. Gunn of Swainsboro, her children Dr. Joseph (Jo) Gunn of Gainesville, GA, Timothy (Karen) Gunn of Columbia, Maryland, and Vivian (John) Dunn of Newnan, Georgia. She has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her best friend, Mary Kalmanson, was a loving and faithful companion throughout Marty's illness, for which her family will forever be grateful.
