Horace D. Brown of Durham, NC died October 12, 2022. He was 103 years old.
Dr. Brown was born in Gainesville, GA. He obtained his B.S (cum laude) from Berry College in chemistry and mathematics, an MS from Emory University in organic chemistry and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University in chemistry and entomology. Dr. Brown was an instructor of Navy V-7 trainees and a chemist in the Manhattan Project. He worked for 14 years in Medicinal Chemistry at Merck & Co., Inc. on insecticides, fungicides, analgesics, chemotherapeutics, steroids, and antiparasitic agents. He worked another 23 years for Merck & Co., Inc. in Scientific Information on structure/substructure searching, proprietary databases, and computer-assisted drug design.
He has been a co-recipient of the first New Jersey Patent Award for thiabendazole and authored or coauthored 32 US patents and 25 publications. Dr. Brown retired from Merck & Co., Inc. as Senior Director, Scientific Information. His professional affiliations included the American Chemical Society, Drug Information Association, Association for Computing Machinery, New York Academy of Sciences, Scientific Information Subsection, Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (twice elected chairman), and Industrial Technical Information Group.
Dr. Brown was predeceased by Louise P. Brown, his wife of 54 years; his second wife, Catherine P. Brown; W. Keith Brown, his son, and Paul D. Brown, his son. Dr. Brown is survived by his daughter, Elyce A. Brown of Durham, NC; his grandson Arlo (Mary-Beth) Brown of Hillsborough, NC; his granddaughter, Rachel (David) Barish of Arlington, VA; a brother, Carlton (Linda) Brown of Dunnellon, FL; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 2:00pm, Coleman Chapel United Methodist Church, Coleman Chapel Road, Wadley, GA. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.
