Mrs. Floye Youmans Simon, aged 93, native of Swainsboro, Georgia, died in Annapolis, Maryland on January 21st, 2014. She was born in Emanuel County, Georgia on August 10th, 1920. Her parents were Ira T. and Sally Mae Kennemur Youmans. Her brother, Tate Youmans, predeceased her and her sister, Sarah Montgomery, who lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Mrs. Simon attended the Barrett School of Nursing at University Hospital in Augusta, graduating in 1942. After graduation, she was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and was assigned to the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1943 she married and left the service to pursue a life as the wife of a Naval Officer. Her husband, H. Spencer Matthews, was a pilot of a B-24 heavy bomber during the war, flying missions out of England. After WWII, her husband remained in service and attained the rank of Admiral. He served four tours of duty in Vietnam. He predeceased her. In 1974, she married retired Navy Commander William Simon and lived in Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after his death in 1979, Mrs. Simon came back to Emanuel County to live in The House on the Hill' on the Youmans' Homeplace. She worked at the Emanuel County Hospital until her retirement in 1995. She leaves three daughters and their husbands, Kathryn and Graham Lovering (London, England), Patricia and Jim Miller (Annapolis, Maryland) and Ann and Marios Karpis (Nicosia, Cyprus), 7 grandsons and one great granddaughter. She was a generous and gracious lady who created an ever welcoming home for all her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She will be much missed. Memorial services for Mrs. Floye Youmans Simon will be held at 2 :00 P.M. Saturday afternoon from the Swainsboro First United Methodist Church with Reverend Scott Brenton officiating. The family will receive friends in the Social Hall of the First United Methodist Church after the memorial service. Arrangements are by Tomlinson Funeral Home of Swainsboro
