Obituary

The world lost a shining star when Alicia Joy Harp Hughes passed to her Heavenly Home on March 18, 2026, at the age of 80. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Hughes was born in Vero Beach, Florida on September 23, 1945 and is survived by 3 children, Gina Denison(Greg), Fawn McArthur and Kevin Hughes, eight wonderful grandchildren, twelve beautiful great grandchildren a sister, Jerry Fulford, Several nieces and nephews and her precious fur baby, Millie. Also, Fred and Kathy Vedder of Brooklet were longtime friends but more like family.

Joy was a woman of strength, courage, perseverance, love,  laughter, and selflessness. Her greatest accomplishment in life was her family whom she loved unconditionally. She was always there for encouragement, laughter, and a hug. She was called Nanny by all of the grandchildren and was always there to pitch in and care for them. Joy loved spending time with her close friends at Swainsboro Presbyterian Apartments, where she loved to garden and participate in community activities. She was known for her holiday decorations and won several decorating contests.  Everyone that came into contact with our Mother always remarked that she was named appropriately because she was a "Joy" to be around.  Her bubbly, contagious personality will always offer comforting memories.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Emma Winingder, two sisters, Judy Johnson and Jan Davis, son-in-law Allen McArthur and several nephews.

We take comfort in knowing that our mom received strength from her Lord and Savior throughout her life, especially this past year.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Pruitt Hospice, Tomlinson Funeral Home of Swainsboro, Kennedy Funeral Home of Metter and Georgia Southern University.

A celebration of Life will take place in the near future.
